Larkspur (Delphinium) belongs to the buttercup family (ranunculacea) and is a beautiful, flowering plant. There are perennials as well as annual varieties. Depending on the species, the plants can reach a height of 40 to sometimes up to 180 cm. The flowers of the larkspur form on the long, straight stems and are blue, purple, white, yellow or pink in colour.
Sowing and growing Larkspur
Larkspur is a plant from the buttercup family. There are different types of larkspur, both annual and perennial. The plant easily self-sows. Depending on the species, larkspur originates from, for example, Europe, Western Asia and the northern hemisphere. In England, the wild larkspur is an indigenous plant, which has unfortunately become rare due to the use of herbicides, among other things. Larkspur is a beautiful cut flower, but beware this plant is poisonous.
Sowing Larkspur with seeds
Larkspur is resistant to cold weather and can be sown early in the spring, from March to the end of May. The seeds can also be sown in autumn, in October, giving the plants a head start. The plants flower from around June to October.
