Growing and Sowing Of Spider Flowers

Spider Flower, Cleome hassleriana or Cleome spinosa, is a popular garden plant known for its beautiful flowers. The plant is native to South America and is an annual in cold climates, but sometimes a perennial in tropical climates. The plant blooms with purple, pink and white flowers that have long stamens, making them look like spiders.

Sowing and growing Spider Flower

Spider Flower is an annual plant that originates from South America, where it is a perennial. It owes its name to the long stamens that protrude from the flowers. Spider Flower is a wonderful addition to borders and flower gardens. The plants grow to about 100 cm in height, branch strongly and flower for a long time.

Sowing Spider Flower

Spider Flower can be pre-sown in March and April, indoors or under glass. Sow in the open ground from mid-April to the end of May. Do not cover the seeds too much with soil and press the soil lightly. The plants can, if they are manageable, be repotted into separate pots. They can be planted out in the garden from May. Keep a planting distance of 40 x 40 cm. Pre-sown indoors? Remember that the plants must harden off first.

Position and soil of the Spider Flower

Spider Flower prefers a sunny spot in the garden. The soil should be nutrient-rich, airy and well-drained. To prevent the stems from blowing over in strong winds, a sheltered spot is recommended. Or support the stems with bamboo sticks.

How to care for your Spider Flower plants

Water regularly, especially during dry periods, but avoid getting the soil too wet. This can lead to root rot. Preferably water at the base of the plant. The plants need nutrition. For this purpose, compost or a universal fertilizer can be mixed into the soil when planting. Fertilize once every 3–4 weeks during flowering to obtain more flowers. If necessary, long stems can be tied up to prevent them from blowing over.

Are Spider Flower plants bee and/or butterfly friendly?

The flowers produce a lot of nectar and pollen and therefore attract many bees, bumblebees and butterflies. In addition, they bloom for quite a long time, making them a good food source during periods when less food is available for insects.

Spider Flower in the vegetable garden

Spider Flower is not edible, but it can be a welcome addition to the vegetable garden to increase biodiversity. In addition, the flowers attract many pollinators, which is of course also useful for the vegetable plants.

Is Spider Flower edible and/or medicinal?

Spider Flower is not edible or medicinal.
