Growing and Sowing of Treasure Flower

Treasure Flower, also known as Gazania, is a colourful flower native to South Africa. It belongs to the Asteraceae family, just like sunflowers and daisies, for example. Treasure Flowers are sun worshippers and only open their flowers fully in bright sunlight. When cloudy, at night or if they are in a shady spot, they close their flowers.

Treasure Flower is very drought-resistant. This makes the plant very suitable for rock gardens, for example. Although it is a perennial plant, in the Netherlands it is grown as an annual. This is because the plant is not hardy.

Sowing and growing Treasure Flower

Treasure Flowers are beautiful, flowering plants and belong to the Asteraceae family . The flowers usually have shades of orange, yellow, pink and red, and there are also multi-coloured varieties. As the plant is not hardy, it is grown as an annual in the Netherlands. Bring the plant indoors in winter and with proper care it could survive the winter. These low-growing flowering plants are widely used in rock gardens and as ground covers.

Sowing of Treasure Flower

Treasure Flower can be pre-sown indoors or under glass from February to mid-April. When the plants are large enough, they can be planted in the garden from mid-May. Direct sowing in the garden can be done from the beginning of May.

Position and soil of the Treasure Flower

Always choose a sunny spot in the garden. Treasure Flowers bloom only when there is enough sunlight. The flowers remain closed in insufficient sunlight. Treasure Flowers need well-drained, dry and nutrient-poor soil. Make sure the soil does not stay too moist, as they are susceptible to root rot.
