Growing and Sowing Tips for Cockscomb Flowers

Cockscomb is a plant species from the Amaranth family. This tropical plant is known for its plume-shaped, colourful and velvety flowers and is used both as a indoor plant and in gardens. The flower is composed of many small, densely packed florets, often in bright colours such as pink, yellow, orange and red. It is a striking plant, beautiful in borders and planters, for example, but also as a indoor plant. The flowers have a long vase life and are excellent for drying.

Sowing Cockscomb Seeds tips

Indoor sowing can take place from mid-February to mid-April in a seed tray filled with moist sowing and potting soil. Ensure that the temperature remains between 18 and 21°C. Do not cover the seeds, or cover them only very lightly, as they are light germinators. Plant the young plants outdoors from the beginning of May, after the last frost. Direct sowing outdoors in the open ground is also possible from the beginning of May.

Position and soil for Cockscomb Flowers

Choose a sunny spot in the garden, because the cockscomb is originally a tropical plant and likes a lot of sun. Provide well-drained, fertile soil. If necessary, the soil can be improved by adding compost.
