Radicchio Seeds

Red chicory, also known as radicchio, is a healthy leafy vegetable. It is mainly eaten in southern countries. Radicchio can be sown as early as spring, but later, after the longest day, gives better results. This vegetable, like green chicory, has a tendency to bolt, so that no beautiful heads are formed. By sowing late in the season, you can harvest into winter. Do not harvest the whole plant, but only the leaves. There is a chance that the plant will then sprout again.

There are two types of Radicchio seeds:

  • The type Chioggia, a type with dark red headed vines, similar to lettuce, also called incorrectly red lettuce.
  • The type of red Verona that is silage in Italy in addition to a normal crop. There the technique of silage was introduced by the Flemish gardener Franciscus Van Den Borre.

Radicchio rosso has been grown in Italy for centuries and belongs to the same family as chicory. Radicchio has a bitter taste. A junction was made between red-loft and whitlof. In our webshop you can find the radicchio seeds rossa di chioggia of the buzzy seeds brand.

Radicchio in the kitchen

Radicchio is a somewhat bitter vegetable, which is usually eaten raw, as a salad. When cooked, it loses its colour and crunchiness. You can compensate for the bitterness by adding a tasty dressing or grill it. Radicchio is healthy, it contains many vitamins and minerals.
