Endive is an annual plant that is closely related to chicory. It is available almost all year round and has a slightly bitter taste. In the winter months and early spring, endive comes out of the greenhouse. This endive is much softer than the one from the open field and therefore has a shorter cooking time. Endive is a leafy vegetable that can be eaten both cooked and raw and withstands the cold seasons well. Endives with large heads grown from your own endive seeds are tastier than endives from the supermarket.

Endive seeds in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, endive is grown on about 700 hectares. Dutch endive is mainly available from mid-June to mid-November. In almost every allotment, endive can be found outdoors. Because of their susceptibility to flower, the plants must be grown in a warm place for early cultivation. If the endive is sown after the longest day (21 June), it will not start blooming in the same year. Especially the outer green leaves of the endive are rich in vitamins A and C as well as minerals.
