Rye can be grown as a green manure crop, a fodder crop and/or for ground cover. Winter rye can be sown late and is not susceptible to frost. The crop is highly suitable as a green manure following crops that are harvested late. It provides fairly rapid and effective ground cover and ensures very good root penetration of the topsoil. Rye is mainly grown on sandy and valley soils (both as a cereal and as a green manure) but also thrives on loamy and clay soils. Plots prone to waterlogging and mud are less suitable for rye cultivation. Winter rye is also used to stabilise the soil on wind-erodible land, for example in the Veenkoloniën. 1.5 kg is required per 100 m².
