St. John's Wort Seeds

St John's Wort, Hypericum Perforatum, gets its name from the St John's Day, a holiday celebrating the birth of John the Baptist. It is a perennial plant in the hypericum family. The herb, native to Europe and Asia, has been used for its medicinal properties for many years. Even today, there are herbal products for sale with St. John's wort, which are mainly used for mild depressive symptoms and gastrointestinal complaints. The beautiful flowering plant can reach a height of 20 to 80 cm, is very hardy and blooms from June to September with yellow flowers.

St John's wort is hardly used as a kitchen herb. Tea can be made from the upper parts of the plant, both fresh and dried.

It is mainly used for its medicinal properties, for example as an oil, macerate or tincture, and could provide relief for mild depressive complaints and gastrointestinal complaints. In retail shops, it is often offered as a supplement. Take care when using it both internally and externally. It can affect the effect of other medication and lead to skin irritation and burns, especially in combination with sunlight. In the Netherlands, The National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), warns against the use of St. John's wort.
