Prennial flowers are sown a little later than the Annual species (June-July) and bloom early in the following spring. What are perennial flowers?

Perennial flowers and plants, often simply called perennials, can stay in the garden for multiple years, as the name suggests. They are hardy. Most varieties are sown late in the year, from August through October, to bloom the following summer. It is also possible to sow them earlier in the year in a seedbed first, and then transplant them to their final spot once the seedlings are large enough. The great benefit of perennials is, of course, that they come back every year. In addition, there are also perennials that stay green during the winter.

Why shouldn’t you only sow perennial flowers?

The big advantage of perennials is, naturally, that they come back every year. On top of that, most plants grow larger year after year. Only benefits, you might say. However, perennials generally bloom only for a short period, and most of them only during the summer months. To be able to enjoy flowers in the garden during spring and autumn as well, it is highly recommended to also sow annuals and biennials.

What should you consider when choosing perennial flowers?

Besides general factors such as height, location, and color, which are already described for the various varieties, it is also important when growing perennials to consider the blooming season, whether they stay evergreen/winter-green, and where they are planted. Many varieties bloom late in the season. Keep this in mind and place them between annual or biennial bloomers, for example. Do not place the winter-green plants all together in one spot, but scatter them throughout the garden, so that green can be seen in multiple places during winter.
