Growing and sowing Columbine
Columbine (Aquilegia) is a graceful perennial plant best known for its striking, often bicolored flowers with characteristic spurs, which are narrow, tubular protrusions at the back of the petals. It is native to temperate regions of Europe, North America, and Asia, and in the wild, it often grows in light woodlands and mountainous areas. Columbine typically blooms from late spring to early summer and attracts many bees and bumblebees. The plant is known for its airy, elegant appearance and is therefore widely cultivated in gardens, especially in borders and naturalistic plantings. The plant can sometimes self-seed spontaneously.
Sowing and growing Columbine
Columbine is a perennial plant that is especially valued for its graceful, unique flowers and its easy growth. In spring, the plant forms fine, dissected leaves, above which slender flower stems emerge with striking blooms. These flowers usually have five petals, and behind them are the characteristic spurs that contain the nectar. Columbine typically blooms from May to July and comes in many colours, such as purple, blue, white, pink, and yellow. Some varieties are bicolored. After flowering, seed pods form that burst open easily, causing the plant to often self-seed throughout the garden.
It grows best in a spot with partial shade to sun and in well-drained soil.

How sowing Columbine?
Columbine is a cold germinator, which means that the seeds only germinate well after a period of cold. Sowing indoors is possible from January to March. Place the seeds in a damp environment in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 weeks before sowing. After this, the seeds can be sown in seed trays, for example. As soon as the seedlings have at least 4 to 6 true leaves, are strong enough, and the risk of night frost has passed, they can be planted out in the garden. Do make sure to harden off the plants first.
Sowing directly into the open ground is possible in April-June or August-September. Scatter the seeds in a weed-free, finely raked spot in partial shade and press them down lightly.
Note that columbine seeds are light germinators. Therefore, do not cover them with soil, but only press them down lightly so they remain on the surface.
Position and soil for columbine seeds?
Columbine prefers a sunny to partially shaded, sheltered spot. More sunlight ensures a more abundant bloom. The ideal soil is loose, rich in humus, and well-drained, but slightly moist. Improve poor sandy soil beforehand with compost or leaf mold to mimic natural woodland soil.
How to care for your Columbine plants?
Keep the soil constantly, slightly moist. To stimulate blooming, organic fertilizer or compost can be added to the soil in spring. Remove spent flowers along with their stems to encourage a second bloom. Columbine self-seeds easily. By leaving the last flowers on the plant, the seed pods will dry, after which they burst open and the seeds scatter.
Is Columbine bee and/or butterfly friendly?
Columbine is a particularly insect-friendly plant that contributes to local biodiversity. Because the plant blooms early in spring, it is an important source of food for all kinds of pollinators. The flowers produce plenty of nectar and pollen, attracting many bumblebees, bees, and butterflies.
Columbine in the vegetable garden?
Columbine is not edible and is mildly toxic. However, the plant can be of added value in a vegetable garden because it blooms early and attracts pollinators, which is naturally beneficial for the pollination of early vegetable crops. The flowers can also be used in bouquets.
Is Columbine edible and/or medicinal?
Columbine is toxic and is nowadays not used for medicinal purposes.
Please note, we at Dutch Garden Seeds do not give medical advice. Always ask a professional if and how the plant can be used medicinally.
