Growing and Sowing Parsley

Parsley is a must have herb in the garden. It is  very easy to grow and you can also grow this herb indoors in pots so you have fresh herbs at home almost all year round that you can use in various dishes: fresh homemade tomato soup for example. We will explain below how and where you can best get started with sowing the parsley seeds.

When to sow parsley

You can sow parsley indoors on the windowsill but also in the open ground, in a greenhouse or outside in pots. For outdoor cultivation, it is best to start from the end of February. Later when the plants are about 5cm. high, you can place the parsley wherever you want. You can start sowing parsley until the end of May and you can enjoy your fresh homegrown  parsley in the same season.

How to sow parsley

Parsley seeds, like many other types of herbs, are slow germinators. In cold weather it can take up to 3 to 4 weeks before the first plants are visibly. At room temperatures this will be about 2 to 3 weeks. Put a few seeds in loose soil so that the roots can settle deeper in the soil. Preferably airy sow and cutting soil. Cover the seeds lightly with soil so that they are sown no deeper than about half to 1 cm deep. Give the seeds some water and keep them moist but not soaked.

Where to sow parsley

Parsley can be sown in full sun but a little shade is no problem either. You can place the pots indoors on the windowsill or on the balcony. If you sow the parsley directly in the ground, keep in mind that the parsley needs some space.

Parsley seeds

To get the best results from the parsley seeds, it is recommended to use fresh parsley seeds. Parsley seeds usually stay good for several years, as long as they are kept dry and not too warm. In the webshop of Dutch Garden Seeds we have several types of parsley seeds:

Parsley cuttings

Parsley cuttings is a way to grow new parsley plants but this is certainly not easy. You should therefore ask yourself if it is maybe wiser to sow new seeds instead. If you do want to try parsley cuttings :  cut some side shoots of the plant and put them in some water and  wait until small roots appear.

Freezing parsley

It is possible to freeze parsley. Wash it well and dry with a paper towel and then put it in a freezer bag. Place in the freezer at -18°C. The parsley can be kept this way for 12 months. The taste will be well preserved.

How to dry parsley

It is also possible to dry parsley. There are at least 3 ways to dry the parsley.

  1. In an oven: Wash the parsley and place it on a clean baking sheet. Set the oven to 40°. Leave it in for 1 to 2 hours. Check it regularly. After the parsley has become crunchy, let it cool down and then put it in an airtight glass jar. Keep in mind: after about half a year, the taste will diminish.
  2. In a food dehydrator: basically the same description as above, only slightly shorter. Around 1 to 1.5 hours.
  3. Drying parsley by hanging it up: Wash the parsley and then bundle it. You can hang the bundles upside down in a paper bag. Make some small incisions in the bag to allow the air to flow. Let the parsley hang for about 2 weeks and then check if the parsley is dry enough to put in a jar.
