With early sowing (annual) in February or March under glass, you have the advantage that the plants will bloom profusely as early as the early summer of the same year. After transplanting them into the flowering border or pots in April or May, you can enjoy the flowers all season long. If you choose late sowing (biennial) in the heart of summer, the plants will first focus on developing a strong root system and a compact habit in autumn. After transplanting in autumn, they are perfectly rooted to explode extra early and vigorously into a sea of flowers the following spring. When raising the seeds in a seedbed or tray, you can prick out the young plants as soon as they are strong enough and easy to handle by hand. Then, transplant them to their final, preferably sunny to partially shaded destination, maintaining a planting distance of 20 x 20 centimetres. This gives the horned violets sufficient space to grow into a beautiful, continuous, and ground-covering carpet of flowers.
